Ellen Elizabeth Canniff (William3, Margaret2, John1) was born in Royalton May 15, 1841, but her father's family removed to Middleburgh a few years later and she attended school in that township and in Berea.
On September 7, 1861, she was married to George B. Canniff who was born in 1836. At the time of his marriage he was a mechanic in the employ of the Berea Stone Company. October 28, 1862, he enlisted in "Company 5, Independent Regiment, Ohio Sharp Shooters," and was under command of Col. Barber. He served nearly three years in this famous regiment. He was engaged in the battle of Lookout Mountain. He was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., June 27, 1865, on account of sickness and disability. He died in 1871. Upon his young wife had fallen much of the care and responsibility of rearing their young children. She was stricken with quick consumption and died on March 28, 1873.

William Lester Canniff (Ellen4, William3, Margaret2, John1) was born in Berea May 23, 1862. On the death of his mother he was taken into the family of his grandfather, William Engle. He attended school in Middleburgh and Berea. He was married in Cleveland on June 20, 1883, to Miss Mary A. Minut, who was born in Rockport, Ohio, July 20, 1863. Mr. Canniff writes: "I am mechanical superintendent for the T.A. Gillespie Company and at present am located at High Falls, N.Y. I have followed the contracting business most of my life and have been largely employed on tunnel construction, having helped build the Cleveland Water Works Tunnel, the Cincinnati Water Works Tunnel, the Belmont Tunnel in New York City and the New York Aqueduct Tunnel at High Falls, N.Y.
I have made several inventions of tunnel appliance machinery. In May, 1907, I was elected a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
My son Roy, is an auditor, employed by the Degnon Contracting Company of New York. My son, William, is an investigator for the Traveler's Insurance Company."
Mr. Canniff died August 29, 1911, at High Falls, N.Y., and is buried at Berea, Ohio, in Woodvale.

George Arthur (Ellen4, William3, Margaret2, John1) is the second child of Ellen E. and George B. Canniff. He was born in Berea, Ohio, in 1864. His father and mother died before he was nine years old. Until he was fourteen of age he lived with his mother's sister, Mrs. Adelaide Carman, in Berea and attended school there. He then went to live on the farm with his grandfather, William Engle.
In 1891 he married Katherine Jones and they made their residence in Cleveland. Three children were born to them. Mrs. Canniff died several years ago. Mr. Canniff and his two sons are supposed to reside still in Cleveland, but nothing has been heard from them for some time.
