My name is Bonnie Nilsen and I am a great, great, great, great granddaughter of John Shepherd.
I am the daughter of Frank Nilsen, who was the son of Hazel Putt Nilsen, who was the daughter of Viola Burroughs Putt, who was the daughter of Seymour Burroughs, who was the son of Rebecca Shepherd Burroughs, who was the daughter of John Shepherd.
I first read through the old family history book when I was about 12, laughed at some of the pictures and text and then mostly forgot about it until my first grandchild was born in 1998. That year when I visited my parents I took the book home with me so I could transcribe it and put it online. (I had already been designing websites for three years by that point.)
In the winter of 1998-99 I put the John Shepherd Family website up on free space at Rootsweb, along with a GEDCOM of the book. Gradually 'cousins' started to find me and I added information to the site, including some book corrections and a small 'online reunion' section.
In February of 2010, Tom Jordan of the City of North Royalton got in touch with me and said that the city was applying for a historical marker for John Shepherd at the cemetery, and was also considering a commemoration ceremony. That was pretty exciting news!
A few weeks later I noticed that a new website, JohnShepherd.US, was up and running. I hope with my additional links about the genealogy of John Shepherd that many more people will be attracted to this whole celebration.
